Alteril

alteril

According to its official website, Alteril is “the sleep aid that can make all the difference in your sleep.” It’s also advertised as an “all-natural alternative for getting the deep, restful sleep you need.” Alteril claims to provide prescription-strength benefits without risking severe side effects or addiction.

I have my doubts, however. Is it possible for an over-the-counter sleep aid to bring about the same results as prescription medications without any of the same dangers? Let’s take a look at Alteril and find out.

About the Manufacturer

Alteril is made by Biotab Nutraceuticals. Biotab’s official website, unfortunately, does not provide a lot of information. The whole site is a single page, and its copyright date is 2009, which definitely makes me skeptical.

Biotab claims on its website to “provide the best all-natural, lifestyle supplements to meet the growing demands of people striving to improve their lives.”

The Better Business Bureau has given Biotab a C+ rating. This is largely due to the 382 complaints consumers have filed against Biotab. Common complaints include:

• Consumers ordered products but then received excessive charges and shipments each month.
• Customers returned products without receiving any refund, and Biotab continued sending and charging for the canceled products.
• Biotab automatically enrolled customers in the company’s monthly renewal program, even when customers had specifically asked not to be in the program.

However, Biotab maintains a C+ rating because, according to the BBB, they have properly responded to at least some of the customer complaints and issued refunds. Also, the BBB says they “have sufficient background information on this business.”

Biotab’s poor record isn’t instilling a lot of confidence in Alteril. However, I can’t make a final judgment call until I evaluate Alteril’s formula.

Alteril’s Ingredients

Alteril contains only three active ingredients: L-tryptophan, melatonin, and valerian root extract.

L-tryptophan (666 mg)
L-tryptophan is an amino acid that increases the body’s serotonin. The de-stressing hormone serotonin is necessary to maintain a regular sleep cycle. L-tryptophan helps users fall asleep quickly and stay asleep throughout the night.

Melatonin (4 mg)
The hormone melatonin normally works in the brain, controlling wake and sleep cycles. Supplementing the body’s melatonin levels prevents daytime drowsiness and allows for rapid sleep onset.

Valerian Root Extract(40 mg)
Valerian root extract has been clinically proven to treat insomnia [1]. However, a sleep aid needs between 400 and 900 mg of valerian root extract to be effective. Thus Alteril’s 40 mg dosage is not enough to treat insomnia.

Alteril Formula Analysis

Both L-tryptophan and melatonin are effective sleep-promoting ingredients when at the right dosages. Fortunately, the Alteril label lists each ingredient’s dosage, allowing me to see there is the right amount of both L-tryptophan and melatonin.

However, Alteril doesn’t have enough valerian root extract to be effective. This is strange because Alteril claims valerian root is one of its primary ingredients.

Potential Side Effects

Alteril may cause the following side effects:

• Anxiety
• Depression
• Vivid nightmares
• Headaches

These side effects are pretty standard for a sleep aid, but users should still exercise caution when using Alteril.

Customer Reviews

User Aklbiche from Nevada told GNC.com, “I’ve tried Alteril three times last week, and I did not sleep better at all. This product does not seem to do anything at all, except giving me a headache.”

Another Alteril user, Sammi001, told Walmart.com, “I have tried this product over and over…but I wake up two hours later. Don’t waste your money on this product.”

An anonymous user from Georgia told PissedConsumer.com, “The pills do not work, the company does not honor refunds, they have an invalid webpage, they do not answer the phone, and they charged my credit card without my permission.”

These testimonials make me extremely wary of Alteril. Not only does it seem to be ineffective, but Biotab does not take care of their customers.

Purchasing Alteril

You can’t buy Alteril from the Biotab website, but you can purchase a 60-capsule supply from other websites:

• GNC.com: $29.99
• Walmart.com: $16.94
• Amazon.com: $13.20
• CVS.com: $13.99

Alteril: Yes or No?

I don’t recommend trying Alteril. Though it contains some effective ingredients, customers say Alteril does not work.

Also, I am not a fan of Biotab’s shady customer service practices. I think you should save your money and seek out a different sleep aid.

Carol Glawson Says:

I fell for the advertising on TV.

I tried Alteril for the first time last night and experienced all the aforementioned side effects. I finally fell asleep around 3:00 AM for a few minutes and had a terribly vivid dream. I was in my recliner, because I felt like I couldn’t breath. When I felt better about my breathing, I got back in my bed and fell asleep for a few more minutes, around 4:30 AM, and dreamed again. I tried to stay in bed to get some rest and to get rid of this terrible headache. Dozed off around 6:30 AM and experienced another bad dream. Finaly, I got up, but still have a terrible headache and overall bad feeling. It is now 12:00 AM and I’m not much better.

Courtney Says:

I agree about Alteril. I bought some last night took two at 7:00 pm. First of all it took 3 hours to even make me a little sleepy but it also made me feel nauseous. I laid down at 9:45 and couldent fall asleep untill 11:00 then kept waking up. I popped right awake at 3:40 am and felt bodily exhausted but mentally awake. I decided to throw the stuff away after reading comments about Ateril specifically after reading about it being banned in the past and even causing death. Plus the shadiness of the company itself. So thats that, I will now seek a different sleep aid…
Thank You for your time.

Val Says:

Alteril is the answer to my sleep problems. I was being awakened around 3am each night and could not fall back to sleep. I took two pills as directed an hour before bed, fell asleep quickly and when awakened by the dog to go out at 3am, I was able to fall back to sleep easily and sleep until my alarm. In my experience, it does allow for vivid dreams but nothing I would call a nightmare or even close.

I have been using Alteril for over a year now and I really liked it. I only took 1/2 -1 capsule . The past few weeks I have been having horrible nightmares where I was SCREAMING out loud which I never did in my life. This am it took my husband several tries to wake me up. It was horrible. Going to be finding a new sleep aid.

Jennifer Says:

I’ve been using it for a week. The first couple of nights it worked great ! the last couple, not so much. But I’ve been under lots of stress the last few days so I’m attributing it to that.

However, I’ve had none of the side effects, but I have noticed very vivid dreams…but no nightmares…I’ve loved the dreams I’ve had…and I love the fact that I’ve even had a dream since I haven’t had one or remembered one for a long time.

This product might not be for everyone, but it works for me.

So last time was the first time I have tried alteril. I took two and it was about two hours later when I went to sleep. I don’t have a problem waking up when I’m sleeping. But actually going to sleep. Well once I went to sleep I woke up two hours later from a horrible dream. I normally don’t have nightmares. But every two hours I woke up from one. Once I finally got up this morning I felt rested and not tired. But I don’t like the nightmare part. So I might try it a couple more nights and see how it goes.

For the past 20 years, I’ve had difficulty sleeping through the night. I’ve tried MANY over-the-counter sleep aids, but have not wanted to seek out a prescription due to the severe side effects. I’m sure that people will have varied results, but as for me, it works beautifully, in every way.
I have not had any contact with the manufacturer, so I cannot comment on their customer service. All I know is that it works for me, and I’m glad it does. Thanks!

john I have tried alteril sleep aid once. I followed the directions and took 2 pills at 11am and went to bed at midnight. First came the headaches, then an hour later came the nightmares. they were so vivid and violent that I was afraid to fall asleep because I didn’t know what I WOULD DO IN THIS STATE OF MIND.I fought sleep by keeping my eyes open till 3:30 am . By this time the effects of the pills had worn off and I took my own sleeping pill and fell asleep .I very seldom dream and I have never had nightmares like this in my life and I am 73 years old. thank you. Upon taking the recommended dosage of 2 pills, the effects of the Ateril were swift.I first began to feel drowsy which I welcomed as the sign of a good nights sleep ahead,I then laid down in the bed. Then things really became strange.Instead of falling straight to sleep, I was plunged into a strange hallucinatory state of mind.It was as though I began to dream before I was fully asleep! The dreams if you want to call them that were ultra vivid. I had no nightmares but at one point I was carrying on a complete conversation with another individual…Creepy!!!Between these dreams I woke up two or three times that night getting little or no sleep!I plan on taking the alteril back to Walgreens where I bought it, get a refund, then warn the pharmacist of the potential side effects of this stuff!!

I have used this product for over a year now. I normally take 1 tablet of the suggested 2 tablets. 2 if I had a really stressful day and know that there’s no chance I’m going to fall asleep anytime soon. I start feeling pretty sleepy within about an hour, definitely asleep within 2 hours.
Now for side effects the only thing that’s happened to me is that Dreams feel almost too real most of the time. Worth the money for some solid sleep.

CAT Says:

I’ve been having sleep issues for about 5 years. I did not want to try prescription drugs, so tried Melatonin – this did not work getting me to sleep easily even at the extra strenght level and I would awaken a few hours later. I’ve been using Advil PM for about 2 years now. This kept me asleep, but did not help me to get to sleep. It took several hours and then I was groggy in the morning if I took more than 1 pill or took it too late at night. I found Alteril at CVS a few days ago while travelling. I had forgotten the Advil at home and WOW! Fell asleep within an hour and woke when the alarm went off feeling fine. This is the 3rd day with positive results. No sign of bad dreams or allergic reaction and hope it does not affect me adversely as I am enjoying a full nights sleep for the first time in several years.

SmithSL503 Says:

I have a huge sleep disorder as part of my Fibromyalgia. The Dr had treated the sleep disorder with prescription meds for years. I decided that prescriptions meds were not for me and the Dr & I looked for an acceptable solution that still produced the sleep results I require. We have opted for 2 Alteril (for the L-Tryptophan) and 1 5HTP (the pre-cursor to Serotonin). We discovered that Alteril does not produce sleep so fast that you take the pills and then you need to immediately jump into bed. It takes 2 – 3 hours after taking the pills to work. Also, taking the pills on a full stomach after dinner produce almost no sleep results. I have to take the two Alteril on an empty stomach while cooking dinner. This gives the Alteril a chance to work. By the time we finish dinner and clean up the kitchen, I’m starting to slow down. I get some evening in with relaxation and about bedtime, I’m ready to go to sleep. If I awaken during the night, I can always go back to sleep. I dream vivid dreams, but not nightmares. I experience no side effects. I have been using Alteril nightly for almost 5 years. Alteril continues to help me manage my sleep disorder; sleep has reduced the pain level of my Fibromyalgia. I will not be without Alteril.

Wendell Bodenham Says:

First & foremost, your listed dosages and ingredients for Alteril are wrong. Perhaps you used the 666mg to scare Bible thumpers.ui Perhaps your information is simply outdated. But, no one in their right mind would surpass 300mg of L-Tryptophan. That being said, the active ingredients are (in a 2 gelcap serving size): 200mg of L-Tryptophan, 90mg of GABA(Gamma-Aminobutyric-Acid, naturally found in the body, but decreases with age), 40mg of Valerian Root Extract, 4mg of Melatonin, and a proprietary blend of Chamomile Flower Extract. The addition of GABA is supported by the medical community and is at a perfect dose. It is manufactured in the USA from products from the USA by Biotab Neutraceuticals. As with all supplements, always consult wih your physician before taking.

I have suffered from insomnia for a couple of years and a friend recommended Alteril. I had not seen it on TV or any other place. I bought it from Target, the last box on the shelf, for $16.98. I have taken it for 2 weeks and have fallen asleep easily and slept all night. If I do wake for the bathroom, I go right back to sleep and wake up at 6am with no hangover.

May 11, 2014 at 6:59 pm

Steve S Says:

I have taken Aleril for a few weeks. I am not using the latest version or the improved on, but the one that has been on the market for some time, it has a predominantly white and yellow box with a picture of a woman’s head resting on a pillow asleep. I have noticed I am coming down with some really bad headaches. I thought it was sinus related because I do summer from that issue. But I noticed that I never had sinus headaches before and I realized they began after a few weeks of using Alteril. I have to take 800 MG of Asprin, to get to the point where I am comfortable enough to sleep. So I will try the latest and greates to see if I get the same results. It does help me sleep just a little, but I think a proper diet and exercise also is the key to a good nights rest.

This has been a God send since I was always awoke at 3 am and stayed awake. Now I sleep till 5:30. LOVE IT.
No side effects whatsoever…and I usually get some side effects from meds.
Paid $11.99 at my grocery store.
I do not care what the nay sayers say… this does work.
Glad to have found it. And NOOOOO I was not promoted by anyone who is involved in making this product to write this review.
I hope it helps others.

Alteril, scary product. I took 1 softgel at 10:30 P.M. last night. Went to bed and to sleep at 11:30. Woke up at 1:00 A.M. to a scary dream. I felt someone hit me. Yes, I felt the smack and said outloud, “Mother why did you do that ?” I am 75 years old and Mother has been dead for years. I slept on & off until 9 A.M. No more Alteril. My pharmacist recommended this but I’ll take it back after one dose last night. I’m afraid to try it again and should have checked this website first! During the night, I had a horrible headache with nausea and fight/flight symptoms. I slept only a few hours at a time (although it seemed like a long time had passed through each sleep cycle) and made three trips to the bathroom. Barely functioned at work today. Came home and took an hour nap – again, thought I had slept a long time. It was very strange and still feel loopy with excessive thirst – perhaps my body telling me to get rid of it in my system. Thumbs down. I’ll try some Valerian tea tonight.

Works well for me. I wake up refreshed, but it doesn’t knock me out or give me a hangover like diphenhydramine – I wake up quickly, and I think I am in a better mood. Don’t use it daily, maybe once or twice a week, but find it better than anything else I’ve tried.

SR Says:

Alteril was recommended to me by a nurse in ER who had used it while working nights. I had also worked nights as a nurse and have had trouble sleeping even now that I’m retired. Unisom (doxylamine succinate) would work but I would be groggy the next day even if I only took 1/2 pill. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) sometimes makes me sleepy and other times makes me restless–unpredictable. I have restless legs that keep me awake and the Alteril helped a lot. I usually only take one pill about an hour before I go to bed and I’m sleepy when I get in bed. If I wake up to let our dog out or go to the bathroom I go right back to sleep. The only slight side effect is vivid dreams that I remember but no nightmares.
My only complaint is that it’s hard to find in stores.

August 12, 2014 at 5:27 pm

SR Says:

Just because it doesn’t work for some people does not mean it should be taken off the market. If everything that caused allergic reaction or didn’t work for some people were taken off the market we wouldn’t have Tylenol, penicillin, Benadryl, aspirin or peanuts; in fact, we probably wouldn’t have any medicines at all and very few food products. It does work for a lot of people so let us use it.

August 12, 2014 at 5:36 pm

PFS Says:

All I got out of taking Alteril was severe headaches. It was so bad, I’d wake up every couple of hours with a monster sized headache. Tried taking just one pill (a half dose) and the same thing – a headache that woke me up. After three days, I gave up and tossed the rest. It may work for others, but it doesn’t work for me.

Hands down…. best otc sleep aid I have tried. if they sell it on the store’s shelves, I have tried them! I have an extremely abnormal work schedule and take this every single day/night. Within an hour of taking it, I CANNOT keep my eyes open anymore and it’s game over for me. And I haven’t suffered any bad side effects in the 8 months I have been using this product.

August 31, 2014 at 5:20 pm

CourtneyH Says:

Alteril doesn’t work at all, and is way too expensive for something that produces zero results. Maybe it works for some who don’t have major issuses with insomnia, but even so they could just take melatonin to save some money if that’s the case. For those like myself who have tried various sleep aids (both prescription and otc) this is absolutely a waste of money. I’m so glad you posted this information and I hope others find this article before investing in this product.

Believe me, I`ve tried it all. Mixed results. Have been taking 1 per night(2 left me hungover)for the last week. I have had vivid dreams a ouple times. I go to bed as soon as I feel groggy and it`s “lights out” for me. I sleep all noght. I do feel slightly groggy for the first hour of the day then I feel great. I hope you keep selling it retail, it1s the best OTC sleep med I have ever tried.

has 4 mg Melatonin?

Please advise Thanks

H. Caspar,
No, the label says that one serving contains 4 mg of melatonin. So 2 pills contain that much.

This product works great for me.

Christina Cochran Says:

I experience dizziness, anxiety/panic attacks/depression and nausea with this product. I did my research on the ingredients before taking it. Was and am leary of some of the ingredients, but am so exhausted from no sleep that I gave it a chance. No more! It does not work and the side effects are horrible. Scary scary sleep aid. thought it was just me but after reading the reviews I see that I’m not alone in this. I think I’ll go back to yoga and a serious exercise routine, maybe a shot of bourbon before I sleep.

October 13, 2014 at 10:42 am

Christian Says:

I just started using Alteril a couple weeks ago because I have been struggling with my sleeping schedule. Although it may work for me, I get these terrifying nightmares every time I take them. Also I feel like I’ve been feeling more and more depressed. If you’re looking to get some sleep, Alteril works, but as for the side effects I feel like it’s not worth the risk.

I’ve been taking Alteril for 12 nights, I don’t have the nightmares but do however wake up with bad headaches and have experienced the anxiety and depression.

Catherine Lampton Says:

This product has good ingredients listed, but I did not sleep well with it. Sort of like being in an altered state, but not asleep. Also, it liquefied my digestive system for over 12 hours and that was very uncomfortable. I threw it away.

Natalie Says:

I have taken it with my antidepressant. Worked for one week didn’t take my antidepressant for a couple of days but still took it and two months later still take it not knowing it was causing my nightmares not my depression and past. I sleep for 15min with a nightmare wake up bc I was screaming and talking in my sleep. Then fall back asleep for like 30 min and would have a continuation of the other dream and wake up reaching out for help and screaming. I also have random dialogue in my head. Very jumpy. And think I see thing/people looking at me in crazy random places. I will never ever take this med again! Ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS MED! I also had the waking up short of breath. I actually woke my boyfriend up two nights ago telling him I couldn’t breath!! I thought I could have a tumor or something,,,omg so scary

Do not waste your hard earned money on this “miracle” sleep aid. IT DOES NOT WORK! A huge disappointment.

Mary Says:

I am on my second box and have had no problems with Alteril. I, like many others who like it, only take one tablet. There may be a problem with overdosing. When I took Ambien years ago, I only took half a tablet and never had the problems many people reported. I only take it when I have to get up early, about 3-4 times per week.

December 4, 2014 at 9:36 am

Susan Says:

Been taking 1 a night for over 3 yrs.
Works well for me. I haven’t had a headache in about that amount of time..
But …the last 2 weeks when I wake my eyes are swollen..now severe facial swelling…I’m going to discontinue taking it.

Sharon Lee Says:

I have used Alteril for years. Works well for me. No nightmares or headaches. I am a 68 yr old female. Does not leave me groggy the next day. I am very happy with this product. And so glad it is over the counter. I had years of restless nights before finding Alteril.

January 8, 2015 at 12:58 am

Lorraine Dusseau Says:

Alteril works wonders for me and my daughter! We are both insomniacs. I wonder if some of the people taking it have other meds they’re interacting with. I have essential oils and have a way I use to up the Valerian root portion of it-And it has Chamomile, Melatonin. You can’t jump into bed and watch TV or hours and use the product like a light switch to put you to sleep immediately.Bedtime rituals help- I have Lavender I spritz on my pillows. Magnesium is great for anxiety relief and even lowering your blood pressure. My guess would be the disappointed customers aren’t using the product correctly. (I take 2 capsules nightly.. and feel great in the am!

January 19, 2015 at 12:36 am

Linda Says:

I’ve been taking Alteril for over 3 years. I take the suggested dosage, 2 tabs, every night. I was surprised to read there are side effects to taking this product. As for vivid dreams…I’ve always had vivid dreams. I started taking Alteril because I was getting an average of 2-3 hours of sleep at night and Tylonol PM wasn’t helping a great lot. I get at least 6 hours when I take the Alteril. Thank you Alteril.

January 21, 2015 at 9:56 pm

Esme Says:

Well, unlike many comments, this product really works for me. It is important to mention that it is really hard that a sleep product works for me, just that when I take a pill (yes one, not two) i experience a headache. This is when I need to sleep, it is like if that headache were a sign that I need to sleep, I don’t know if I explain it well. The downside, is that I think im addicted, I need them to sleep and when I don’t have those pills, i also sleep but with much struggle or very late like 3-4 am.

January 23, 2015 at 3:27 am

Marion Runge Says:

I have read all the comments on Alteril yet I cannot found an answer I need. Does Alteril cause high blood pressure? I need an answer asap. I have been using it for over a year and now have high blood pressure and need to know if it has caused it. Thank you.

March 6, 2015 at 1:10 pm

Pete Says:

It is apparent there are two different formulas as CVS sells two. I take the one that does not have valerian root. I found out however that from my pharmacist that I could buy both L- tryptophan and melatonin as supplements and cost is much less. Though I wasn’t able to get the exact mg as Alteril, I was able to get both supplements close to same dosage. On top of cost savings, the side effects are much less such as vivid nightmares and headaches. Either way, I got results from Alteril, but chose to buy supplements from pharmacy at a much lower cost. L-tryptophan was 500 mg and melantonin was 4mg. If correct there is a gel tablet and a regular tablet (like a aspirin). I started with the tablet before going to buying separate supplements. The gel pill contained valerian root, but not the tablet formula. Hope this adds some more thoughts. Also since I work indoors and get little sunlight, I also take vitamin D after reading about its effects on sleep for those who get limited sunlight. I compared this to how much better I sleep after having spent at beach or simply in a day of yard work. The only negative is my wife says I do “talk” sometimes in my sleep which I did not do before.

March 19, 2015 at 8:39 pm

Mark Chastaine Says:

Product should be illegal to sale, does nothing to help you sleep. There website claims money back guaranteed however when you call customer service they tell you if you brought from a store it is not guaranteed only directory from them, and that everyone is different and the effects are different on ones outcome. Don’t waste money on this product it is worthless.

March 20, 2015 at 8:44 am

Ken Sears Says:

I have taken Alteril on and off for a few years now. As I frequently travel internationally and have to deal with jet lag, Alteril is a huge help in pivoting to a radically different time zone, especially going west-east when the issue is your system not wanting to go to sleep at night (because it thinks it’s still the middle of the day). I have never taken two capsules the way they suggest. In fact, I usually only take a half capsule! I find the effect to be very gentle, just enough to create a subtle drowziness, which is all I need. If I wanted to, I could even resist the effect and stay awake. I don’t want ANYTHING that’s going to “knock me out”, just something to take the edge off my consciousness and assist me in lulling myself to sleep. For this I find Alteril to be excellent.

March 24, 2015 at 6:48 am

Mike Berens Says:

Folks are having standard issues with two ingredients: melatonin and L-tryptofen (read about these in Wikipedia). The gent with IBS is probably over-reacting to the sweetener Sorbitol which does irritate us IBS sufferers, and can loosen the bowels of “normal” folks, depending on their diets. Folks having disturbing dreams should take less — melatonin extends the REM sleep phase; L-Tryptafen in tablets is more than present a large Turkey dinner. Folks getting nauseous may have a combined supplement+food reaction due to acid reflux and may need a calcium carbonate supplement to settle post-meal acidity. Coffee lovers beware, cafeine is hard to counteract; decaf will help, but may also upset your gut. Drinkee-poos after dinner, and chocolate-laden deserts are also an irritant (and have cafeine).

March 25, 2015 at 3:37 pm

Keith Cochran Says:

Vivid dreaming, whether nightmares or not is generally associated with melatonin.
Directions specifically tell you to take two-if you only take one it is not going to work as described. It is a sleeping aid not a knock out drug. It is consistently good for about 4 hours of sleep.
I go through jet lag related to a 10 hour times change every 35 days and this product helps me through the first 4-5 days until my body can make the adjustment; with no hangover.

April 9, 2015 at 2:53 am

CRG Says:

I am writing a good review for alteril. It has worked for me. I’ve tried others and nothing really worked until this. I take two capsules a night about an hour before sleep. One thing I notice is it will make you groggy in the morning sometimes, but for a good night’s sleep that’s a small price to pay for me. Also it seems for me to work best just an hour or so before I plan to try to sleep. If you take it too soon, and then don’t go to sleep, the good tired effect can wear off and you get a bit of a second wind, depending on what you’re doing. I swear by this pill, others should give it a try,but everyone reacts differently to things.

April 24, 2015 at 3:50 pm

Booker Dewitt Says:

i’m just waking up from my first experience with this now. I work the night shift (7pm-7-am) and need to wake up during the days occasionally on my days off. I followed the instructions at about 11:30pm last night 2 pills with 8oz of water. Within an hour it started kicking in and i was falling asleep. Before i fell asleep i had some wild falling sensation and woke right back up. I guess this would be the vivid nightmare. I started falling asleep again and once more, the falling sensation and woke me up. Each time had my heart racing out of fear. I finally fell asleep after that and had dreams about being stuck in a post apocoliptic world. So the nightmare part was not that fun but i got a good 6 1/2 hours asleep. Before, i was only getting about 3hrs.

I use Allteril almost nightly. Way healthier than Ambien. I sleep much sounder than in years. This is such a good answer. It works great.

Mark Says:

I have been doing Alteril for 4 days. I need to get an 8 – 9 hour night sleep. The first night I took 2 tabs. I woke up about 10 times. The next night I woke up about 7 times. The 3rd night I took 3 pills. I slept through the night. I just am not getting an 8 hour night. In fact this morning I got 5 and 1/2 hours sleep. I am taking these so I can get my 8 hours. I am hoping that if I stay on 3 pills for a few more nights that it will start happening. I HOPE.

Stacey Gibbs Says:

Alteril DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. I adhered to directions and have taken three times this week. The ONLY effect has been headache an hour after taking, but not one bit drowsy. Disappointment is my description of Alteril.

May 26, 2015 at 7:12 am

Kevin Says:

Alteril works amazingly, anybody who says other wise either needs to look at their other habbits (caffine intake) they need to adjust their expectations (this isnt a xanax, this isnt a benadryl this is NOT a drug) or they need to see a doctor because they have genetic issues preventing them for having normal sleep cycles.

This information is NOT outdated, my alteril has 665 mg of tryptophan (they just changed it a few weeks ago because no doubt they realized 666 was scaring their more religious customers away) The gelcaps have a different formula with different amounts of the ingredients. My formula matches what is listed on here.

Trypotphans proven to work some of the herbs in it are proven to work (scientific studies on vitals show relaxation of the body, reduced heartrate and pressure) Cant remember which herbs its either valarian or chamomile. And Melatonin is proven to work.

These arent 12 hour drug that will put you out in a zombie haze and make you groggy in the morning. This product works better than melatonin alone for me, sometimes i do still wake up in the middle of the night but i have no trouble going back to sleep. This products main goal/use/purpose is to get you to sleep. If you need to STAY alseep you need an actually drug like benadryl or a perscription benzopediate.

For some individuals some of the ingredients may cause headaches, but for most its well tolerated. I am amazed at the number of negative reviews here and can only imagine most of you guys have unrealistic expectations or you need perscriptions from a doctor. This wont overpower some perscrption drugs like if you take adderall for adhd, this wont cure your insomnia. If you drink coffee one hour before bed (or even within four-five hours for some people) this wont put you immediately to sleep.

Not trying to overwhelm you guys with an Essay on alteril, i am just dissapointed in what i see here with what is an amazing product for me.

May 29, 2015 at 11:10 pm

Cath Says:

I think the diarrhea that comes with taking Alteril is from the
sorbitol added to it. Why is sorbitol added?

For this reason, I won’t be able to take Alteril anymore.

Tracy Says:

I have successfully used Alteril nightly for the past year almost. It has solved my sleep problems. Before Alteril I regularly woke up around 3-4 a.m., and could not fall asleep again. Now I sleep through the night!

Used this sleep aide one night didn’t get any sleep noticed 2 days later my right eye was blurry. De sided to try once more the next day woke up with both eyes blurry. I threw it away it’s been 4 days and my vision still not back to normal. The product bad, dangerous. I pray my eyes go back to normal.

Works great for me! I am a 73 y/o RN and I sleep with 2 small dogs. They snore. Alteril really helps.

Jennifer Says:

This product seems to work for me. I reduced the dosage to one tablet a night. The smell is horrible (smells like cat pee), but it does not leave a taste in your mouth. Just wash hands immediately! Unfortunately I have been having horrible headaches lately that may be due to this product. I need to discontinue use to see if the headaches go away.

August 19, 2015 at 11:09 am

Joannah Says:

I, as well as Elias, take it once in a while and it worked great! I even looked for it recently and could not find any on the shelf, so I’ll just count sheep.

August 27, 2015 at 3:19 pm

Ken Keicher Says:

I first tried an all natural sleep aid called Somnapure, which worked well, but it lacks a couple of the ingredients that Alteril has. The Somnapure also requires 2 tablets taken an hour before going to sleep. I decided to try the Alteril because it has a couple more ingredients and it’s a lot less expensive than the Somnapure. I purchased the Alteril at WalMart and took it as directed for a couple of nights, 2 tablets and could not get to sleep. Then I decided to try just 1 tablet and that was the answer. I have used it almost every night without any side effects. I fall asleep quickly and stay asleep until my bladder wakes me or until morning. If I have to get up to relieve my bladder, I have no trouble getting back to sleep. I have even heard of some people taking half a tablet, so you have to experiment to get the right dosage for your own individual needs. It just proves that sometimes the recommended dose isn’t the right dose for everybody.

Rita Heiberg Says:

I’ve taken this medication for 4 nights. Didn’t seem to help much but still took it. Last night I was having a panic attack because I thought I couldn’t breath. Almost called the ambulance. I was scared. I’ve also had strange dreams and my anger over little things seems to be out of control. I will not take this medication again or recommend it to anyone.

Bought Alteril today for my husband he has chronic insomnia and has trouble getting to sleep til about five or six in the morning. He has used unisom and for a while it worked but recently does nothing and he can’t fall asleep, thought he should try something different he took it at 9:00 and fell asleep about fifteen to twenty minutes after. We will see what he says in the morning but I hope he sleeps through the night. Really need this to work for him “crosses fingers”.

Alteril works for me and my husband. I take one as needed. If I take. I feel groggy next day and get headache sometimes. We like alteril and were disappointed that the Pullman, WA Walmart pulled it off shelf. It worked for us 99%.

Sharon Says:

To the junk it goes! Took it two nights and was awake the entire night…Woke up feeling sick and had a horrible headache. It looks, by reading some of these, that a lot of people were having the same. A lot of money for something that didn’t help me sleep and made me sick besides. I suppose a refund from the manufacturer is out of the question??? And of course the drug store wouldn’t take it back…Stay away, unless you want to stay awake!

November 25, 2015 at 10:56 am

Brooke Says:

My Dad Recommended this product to me.. I tried it a little over a year ago and it did not work, though I was not sober. I have now been sober over a year, and took 2 pills earlier this week. I Slept and did not wake up every hour as usual… When I feel like I am not relaxed enough to sleep I will take 2 pills. I don’t use it every night, but I definitely look forward to the night where It feels like a alterall needed night, because I know I will rest.

November 29, 2015 at 11:08 pm

Carolyn Says:

I took 2 tablets last night for the first time and was awake all night. I was so dizzy and had diarrhea and naseau this morning that I couldn’t go to work as I was afraid to even drive. Taking this back to the store!

Alteril has been working well for me. I don’t even have to take the full dosage; I only use about 1/2 a pill at a time. My problem is that Winn Dixie and Publix have stopped carrying it. Will have to find another source.

Rachel Says:

I have suffered from insomnia for a long time. I have tried everything from over-the-counter to prescription sleep aids and still nothing worked. After many a sleepless night, I saw Alteril at Walmart and decided to give it a try. It worked great!! For the first time in a long time I am sleeping through the night and waking up refreshed (just as advertised). I love it!

March 3, 2016 at 7:38 am

Windin Says:

I have severe insomnia and usually take my prescribed 20mg ambien and trazadone. I ran out of both a little over a month ago and decided to try Tylenol PM and nyquil to see if I could sleep the same as I can with both prescribed medications. I was able to sleep but not long, so I decided to see if a drugstore sleep aid would work. After reading some good reviews I purchased Alteril lastnight. I took 2 pills and after 3 hours I was still wide awake but VERY sick. I felt like throwing up and ended up actually having an asthma attack. After taking my nebulizer for my asthma I fell asleep and wokeup a hour later, feeling groggy and sick still. If you want a OTC sleep aid, I’d suggest Unisom.

Lori Says:

Needed to get off over-the-counter sleep aids that now show a possible link to Alzheimers, so I tried Alteril (first two pills, then knocked it down to one). It worked very well; loved it for the first two weeks, but slowly, my blood pressure began to creep up, and I had feelings of anxiety and headaches. I’m afraid I’m not a good candidate for this, but it clearly works for many others.

August 15, 2016 at 8:19 pm

Lou Ann Says:

I have used Alteril for about 2 years. It has been a real blessing. Before Alteril I was waking up for the day between 1 and 3am every day. I now sleep a full night every night.

February 10, 2017 at 8:16 pm

Karen Says:

I have taken either one or two pills depending on how I feel. I sometimes wake up four hours later, yet I can go back to sleep. My husband and I experienced lower blood pressure, probably due to the L-tryptophan. No extreme nightmares, but believe it may be causing dreams I can remember. We’ve been using it for 2-3 years.

March 16, 2017 at 10:15 am

Lynn Says:

Horrific product!! I’ve been having insomnia issues for 3months but would eventually fall asleep some stuff night with or without a sleep aid. I took the recommended dose of two Alteril after having read the good reviews and immediately I felt calm and ALMOST fell asleep, until I started having severe tinintus, Breathing issues, severe headache, dizziness and confusion, and I was up all night with these horrifc symptoms, finally fell asleep for 3hrs only to fall into a half sleep state and nightmares. I woke up from that 3hrs and im still feeling the same symptoms dizziness, grogginess, confusion, breathing issues, along with delayed thoughts, and rapid heartbeat (no I’m not having anxiety from just thinking about this pill, my symptoms are definitely from these pills). I’m assuming Two pills are way too much L-tryptophan (665mg), and I have no idea what it is that’s affecting my thoughts process, this is VERY strange and I hope to be off this ride soon, but it’s only been 9hrs since I took them. How long did it take for you to feel yourself again if you used this? First time users, Please don’t take these pills, it’s 20times worse having to deal with regular sleep deprivation on top of this drug, I’d rather just feel my regular sleep deprivation symptoms, it’s less painful and tormenting. These pills made me have body aches all over and jittery too. Save your money, just ask Jesus to help you sleep.

Sooze Says:

I have tried Alteril for the first time. I wanted to get off prescription sleep med. Well I have tried it for 5 days and every day I have had a headache. I couldn’t understand why. I usually do not have headaches that feel like I have been it with a hammer. Wow! Only thing new was the Alteril sleeping aide. So you may not publish this response but I really tried to take this pill that didn’t help except give me headaches. Which I didn’t know caused until I read up on it. Thank You
I guess I’ll look for something else I really don’t want to be on prescription sleeping drugs. Any suggestions will help

Roxi Says:

I have used alteril on a regular basis for over a year.
I suffer from insomnia. The medicine does not keep me asleep, but helps to relax me so I can sleep for a few hours each night. My problem is that it causes me to wake up each morning with a migraine. My migraines continue throughout the morning. I am seeing a nutritionist and I have eliminated foods that cause the migraines after I eat.
I’m not sure what to do now. Anyone with any ideas?? HELP!!!

made me go crazy – with the side effects instant Alzheimers? insanity? – soon as I stopped – the side effects all stopped – intense anger fits, forgetfulness, loss of mental skills, and seeing things that were not really there – scary stuff! I saw pinecones on a plate of Mexican food – when I looked again they were gone! I was seeing other things too! all way too risky for me – and they helped me sleep – but ruined the awake hours –

November 15, 2018 at 12:53 am

Andre Says:

Alteril has been great for me. I don’t think it’s for people with severe insomnia so maybe that’s where a lot of the complaints are coming from. I mean you can’t take it on a rollercoaster and expect it to work. You have to already be in bed, somewhat relaxed, ready to sleep. I only ever take one and it works just fine. Admittedly there is the occasional time I take it where it doesn’t feel like it’s working but that’s usually when Im very wound up. Again, I think that’s where some people are missing the mark. These aren’t valium and they’re not marketed as such. They’re also not gonna leave you in a coma the next day like tylenol pm, etc.
It does make for vivid dreams but I think that’s only because you’re able to spend so much more time in REM sleep. I swear, I hit the Snooze button on my alarm clock and within that ten minutes I’m had another dream!
Great product

May 12, 2019 at 11:58 am

CAROL ELKINS Says:

This company & product are all a BIG FRAUD… They have on their packaging ” # 1 sleep brand” as any one doing a little research can tell that is FACTUALLY NOT the case or they wouldn’t have so many complaints on the BBB. They also operate under several different business names & different phone numbers , however all the “companies” are at the exact same address & same unprofessional man ALWAYS answers phone. I bought the product and tried it for several nites , it did absolutely NOTHING ! My 20 mg of Melatonin & 2 valerian root pills are much more effective & MUCH less expensive ! In fact this is the ONLY herbal sleep product that has NOT WORKED for me ! I lost the receipt to the product , so could not return to store , I called the number on the Alteril box”Global Product management” and had a very ignorant rude man who answered tell me ,” take it back to where you bought it”, I told him I could not and asked for a refund, he beat around the bush & asked me a lot of questions & said..” someone would get back to me” After a week or so and no phone or email contact I called again, again I was told ” someone would get back to me” I asked to speak to the refund dept now, and was told ” it is only one woman and she does NOT take calls” Does this sound like any company you have ever dealt with ? of course not ! So I have waited & waited .Based on a BAD gut feeling from the unprofessional man who always answers the phone & the lack of concern & no call back I decide to follow my hunch that this is a fly by night company hiding something… A little detective work and out of the 3 different names that they hide under Global Product Management, Biotab Nutriceuticals, and N.P.E. ( Natural Product EXPLOITATION Inc.) all with different phone numbers but same address, I have called all 3 during & after business hours and the voice on ALL 3 COMPANIES phones & answering machines is the exact same unprofessional sounding man who answers the phone every time I have called. I am planning to lodge a complaint under all 3 business names, seeing it appears that when they get too many negative reviews they just make up another business name. Dishonest companies get away with stealing from customers because people give up and do nothing. Please, if you have a complaint about ANY PRODUCT, Google the company name & call them , EVERY company I have EVER called with a complaint or refund request is more than glad to refund your money and will want to know what problems you had, the UPC number & the lot number of the product, a good company will also send you coupons for their other products they carry. Honest companies value their reputation & customers and will bend over backwards to make things right ! This is NOT one of those companies !!!
