Said to be the “King of Feel Good Supplements,” Somatomax breaks the mold of typical sleep-aid formulas by utilizing multi-pathway GABA Activity, so you can “get the best sleep you have ever experienced.”

By balancing various hormones in the body, Somatomax supposedly stimulates the release of HGH for improved sleep quality and recovery. It also increases Dopamine production to improve energy, mood, and even sexual desire.

Yet is there more to this supplement than meets the eye? I decided to take a closer look at what Somatomax really had to offer and whether or not it was as safe as manufacturers would have us believe.

What’s Under the Lid?

When I first looked at the supplement facts, I was initially surprised at how vague the instructions and the concentrations were. A single serving is 14 grams per “heaping” scoop which is divided among various herbs and ingredients.

However, upon further investigation, I found the ingredients are clinically proven, effective sedatives.

4-Amino-3-Phenylbutyrica Acid. More commonly known as Phenibut, this ingredient interacts with the central nervous system to relax the mind and body. It eases anxiety and fears to create an ideal environment for sleep.

Gamma Amino Butyric Acid. Often shortened to GABA, this chemical blocks neurotransmitters to improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety

Macuna Pruriens. AKA Cowhage or Velvet Bean, this herb contains the precursor nutrient L-Dopa, which converts into the hormone dopamine in the brain. Dopamine can significantly improve mood while increasing the body’s ability to cope with stress.

L-arginine HCl. This amino acid produces nitric oxide, which in turn triggers the blood vessels to relax. Recent studies suggest that L-Arginine can increase HGH production for improved sleep and muscle recovery.

L-Tyrosine. Another amino acid, L-Tyrosine is synthesized from phenylalanine and also acts as a dopamine precursor. There is consistent scientific data that suggests L-tyrosine can reduce the effects of stress and depression.

L-Phenylalanine. Another amino acid, L-Phenlylalanine is used for depression, though it is unclear exactly how it improves mood.

Are the Ingredients Natural?

For a supplement that is often promoted as a “natural” formula for sleep, Somatomax does contain “natural and artificial flavor, and colors.”

Though the key ingredients can be found naturally in the body, the term is loosely based and is more of a marketing technique than a strict rule.

Is it Addictive?

It can be, if you’re not careful.

Here is one consumer’s experience with Somatomax:
“Somatomax was a dream that turned into a nightmare. It gave me perfect sleep and “on top of the world” mood, all day long no matter what. No matter how much sleep I got, I felt fabulous……until I tried to stop it. Then I could not sleep and got extremely depressed. I felt so addicted to it and never really [knew] what it was like to be an addict until taking this product. I finally got off of it but my mood is still very up and down. Since I have bipolar disorder, I believe that the major issue was that it caused hypomania. If you have bipolar disorder or depression, DO NOT take this product if you want to avoid the nightmare. My mood is still not back to normal, even after a few months of being off of it.”

While another customer reported, “took it for 7 months straight, and found that it worked beautifully to deepen and lengthen sleep at 1/2 of a scoop. Unfortunately, it seems to work less effectively, and now, when I don’t take it, or take less of a dose, my sleep is very, very light and non-restful. I have decided to stop taking it, and I dread the upcoming withdrawal.”

If you currently suffer from chronic insomnia, then you’ll want to consult your doctor before turning to Somatomax. In addition, the formula can be slightly addictive and can interact negatively with various medications or aggravate certain medical conditions.

How to Use Somatomax

Unlike other sleep-aids, this supplement is not a fast-melting tablet or an easy-to -swallow pill. Instead, it’s a sleep-aid you drink.

Unfortunately, Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals does not provide an official website or webpage to explain how to use it or the research behind it. Instead, usage instructions are up to the sellers and distributors, so the instructions vary between sites.

From what I could find, users should take ¼ to ½ a scoop of Somatomax combined with water or another beverage 30 minutes before bedtime, preferably 8 hours before the time you wish to wake up.

The smaller dosage is to determine tolerance to the ingredients. Eventually, you are supposed to take to a full scoop, which is about 14 grams.

However, some sellers warn that “excessive serving amounts may result in dizziness, nausea, euphoria, and diarrhea,” so it looks to me like you’ll have to adjust your dosage depending on your tolerance.

What Does it Taste Like?

Taste preferences, like results, will vary between individuals. Some consumers love the taste of Somatomax, while others found it disgusting and unpalatable.

“Don’t believe the people that say they can’t stand the taste, it cracks me up. It tastes a little like salty fruit punch. Just don’t put a lot of water in there, and knock it back.”

“I love this stuff, the taste is a bit sweet like kool-aid fruit punch, not that bad and once you get use to the taste it is kind of yummy.”

“It tastes like absolute crap. Bitter, with a fake cherry flavor. Not good.”

Where to Order Somatomax

At the time of this review, I could not find an official Somatomax website, though Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals did provide a lengthy advertisement about Somatomax’s mind-blowing abilities at

Consequently, to purchase, consumers have to shop around.

From my experience, the following sites tended to offer the best deals on Somatomax: $39.99 $33.99 $49.95 $39.99

Please note that shipping and returns vary between websites, so it’s always a good idea to read the fine print before you whip out your credit card.

Some sites, such as, provide great customer support if the product doesn’t arrive or arrives in bad condition. Other sites, such as, charge a 25% restocking fee on returns and problems must be reported within 24 hours of receiving the product.

Who Makes Somatomax?

Somatomax is manufactured and distributed by Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals, a company based in Georgia and originally founded in 1994.
Interestingly enough, Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals also manufacturers Sleep RX.

Should You Try it?

Somatomax does have its fair share of risks and shortcomings, but overall, the formula is impressive. The high concentrations of clinically proven ingredients pack a powerful punch in the fight against insomnia.

From consumer reviews I’ve read, it can provide a great night’s sleep while improving mood.

Chris Says:

My wife & I have been using the product for a couple months. At 1st there is definitely a hangover affect. Start with a 1/4 or 1/2 scoop. After a couple months we have tried full scoops but for the same results a 1/2 scoop seems fine + saves a little$$. My wife has noticed a definite increase in mood changes (for the good). She says she has more patients with the children & complicated tasks. She took apart her laptop last week and didn’t fight with it or break anything (unbelievable). The sleep is very restful & you do wake up happy (in our experiences). Sexual side affects- probably not what a guy would be looking for but anything that makes you relax can hurt. Not seeing weight loss but we tried the product for the sleep aid benefits. I was previously waking up nightly for 30-90 minutes a few nights a week. This puts you out but not like ambient(sp) or other sleeping pills. I still wake up & hear the kids crying, you just don’t care, but you are coherent enough to get up & se what’s up with the screaming. Would definitely recommend!

My only concern with any non FDA approved product is the affects on long term use. I have high liver enzymes & what to check a little deeper before using nightly.
anyone have a link to testing this stuff on people long term?

UPDATE as of Aug 2013: I have continued use on & off still. I was diagnosed with Gasteroparesis in Jan 2013 & have experienced Nausea since Dec 2011 4-6 days a week. Taking Somatomax at night was effective in not waking up with the Nausea about 100% of the time. I cannot confirm any long term use issues except at one point it did seem like it might be habit forming. I still only use 1/2 serving on average & the wife can only do about a 1/4 serving or she will sleep the day away til 10-11am if allowed… Google the product, the company & its management & you will learn all about their company & all the products they offer. It still creates a feeling of calmness & restfulness the next morning even after a few years of on & off use. I took a 6-8 month break as I’ve always had concerns about taking anything long term, but when the nausea got bad & I had too much at work I’d start using the product again. Due to illness I stopped working out while using the product so I can’t testify regarding those claims but it makes you sleep & feel great (mood elevator)

I started taking Somatomax 4 years ago after a very long stretch of not being able to sleep. I have insomnia. Here’s my findings:
– great for sleep
– lowered my cholesterol below 200 for first time in 7 years
– the L-Argene facilitated increased cold sores. Once I began offsetting the increased L-Argene with L-Lysine, the cold sores subsided.
– I’m hooked. It’s either take Somatomax & sleep, or not.

S. Davis Says:

I’ve been taking Somatomax for almost two years straight. It’s been incredibly helpful for my sleep – where I used to have very shallow sleep and spend long hours in the middle of the night wide awake. Now, for the first time in years, I sleep deeply and awake refreshed and rested. It also helps me emotionally and my blood pressure and cholesterol have both been very good through some extremely difficult times. HOWEVER, I tried to stop using it last week and the withdrawal was miserable. In fact it was so bad that I went back on it and decided to lower my dosage gradually to try to wean myself off it. So beware – do not try to stop abruptly.

It doesn’t work the same for everyone. I’ve told many of my post menopausal friends about it and many have loved it. However, I had one friend who woke up the next morning at 11, dizzy and nauseous who accused me of trying to kill her. For another, it didn’t work at all – nothing happened. So just be aware of the fact that it reacts differently with different bodies.

Took it for the first time and followed the instructions on the bottle to take 1 heaping scoop. So, after 36 straight hours of sleep with only 1 glass of fruit juice, not to mention sleeping through work and a huge going away party i had been planning on for weeks, I have to say START SMALL!!!!! I was severely dizzy, in and out of a coma like state and really scared. I almost ended up in the E.R. as I felt my heart actually doing crazy things. My boyfriend took it with me and felt rested and crazy energy the next day. It does apparently offer a heightened sexual experience but for me, right after I took it my body started going numb (again, this amount was an absolute and dangerous overdose so please start very with a small dose, especially women) I don’t know anything about the addictive side except to say that my boyfriend is crazy about this product and wouldn’t stop taking it now for any reason. He is so energized all day, and as a personal trainer, he stands and moves the whole day and usually comes home tired and not wanting to do much, that has all changed…..will report in later……

I took the whole scope as was mentioned on the bottle last night and feel horrible today: very dizzy, nausea, and really tired. I didn’t sleep well last night at all and my heart was racing. Won’t take this stuff again. Hopefully, it hasn’t caused in permanent health issues.

My husband uses this and he forced me to try it. I was not getting a whole lot of sleep and I would be in a twilight sleep most of the night.
So I finally gave it a try. The first night I only tried half and had a deep night sleep but felt funky and groggy the next day.
The following night I took half and had another great night of sleep and today I feel like I have so much energy.
I am hoping that tonight will have the same effect.
But for someone who has not been able to sleep for a long time….I definitely recommend it.

I have been taking somatomax for two years. I have sleep apnea, back pain and arthritis in my knees, all that have me waking up every couple of hours. With Somatomax I sleep through the night without waking up. This product does not knock me out. I can take it and watch TV for an hour before I go to bed. I don’t sleep through my alarm and things like the dog barking wake me up,so I’m not a zombie. I’m 6’4″, 270lbs and I only use half of a scoop. As for some people saying they were “addicted”, I didn’t sleep before I used it and I would expect to not sleep if I stopped using it. I also notice an improvement with my mild anxiety.

Brendan Griffin Says:

1st dose last night. Didn’t knock me out but I slept very soundly. So soundly that I didn’t care when my alarm went off and was almost late for work! Though I was tired (1st workout after an 8 day break last night) I felt rested and was in a good overall mood. Felt a little frisky too. Lol. I was a little dizzy though. Didn’t take the full dose as it says to take a “heaping” scoop. Glad I didn’t. Tonight I’m taking even a little less. Half a scoop will be the dose is think. I’ll post again (not that it matters and not that anyone cares for that matter) in a week or so.

Good news and bad news….basically everything they are saying…helps with sleep in a very big way…but you do become hooked…but it has improved my sleep…I do seem to have more tiredness later in day.

BE VERY CAREFUL YOUR FIRST TIME!!!!!! The bottle says heaping scoop, so that’s what I took. The night was amazing but the next morning, I got up to go to the bathroom and couldn’t walk. Literally, I was so dizzy that I couldn’t stand up. I slept for 2 DAYS…… it was like a coma, and I’m not exaggerating. My heart slowed down to a faint beat, and I seem to remember it actually stopping twice. I couldn’t get up to call for an ambulance, and if I weren’t along, I would have had someone take me to the hospital that first day. When I came out of it, I felt better, but it took a couple of days. So, I went on the internet and read that you should start with a 1/4 scoop. My fiancé (260 lb body builder) LOVES it, and was having such great sleep, so I tried it again at 1/4 scoop. It was awesome! Great night sleep, felt amazing in the morning, and aside from the fear I had giving it a second shot, I’m so happy I did! We don’t use it on the weekends, and we have no issues sleeping even then. It’s great for water retention and I’ve lost some weight as well! As I said in the beginning, be very careful your first few times and take 1/4 scoop. I am now a fan, but it could have gone really bad for me. They really need to change the label……..

Tyler Says:

Just got my Somatomax in yesterday and tried it right away. I would definitely have to agree with some of the other above comments on “START SMALL”!! I took the instructed “one heaping scoop”. I slept amazingly, but slept through my alarm and woke up to my roommate shaking me to wake me up. So I think the FULL scoop was probably too much to start off with. I did wake up with a “tipsy” almost “hangover” type feeling, but in all honesty still feel pretty AMAZING right now!! I really feel great and motivated. I was almost a little nervous because of the “tipsy” feeling, but even with that, I truly feel Awesome!! Going to try just a 1/2 scoop tonight and hopefully that will tone it down on the bad effects, with keeping the good! If I was to rate this product its a 9 of 10, but only because they don’t do a very good job of explaining instructions, usage, and/or the ‘effects’ of the product.

Took the scoopful as directed and slept rock solid. I have been sleeping on and off all day, been dizzy and tired all day!
